The other Iraq (Kurdistan)
At the dawn of history, the sun rose in Iraq. This is Mesopotamia, the land known as the cradle of human civilization, where major civilizations first formed.
Babylonian, Sumerian, Assyrian, Chaldean, or Canaanite, many of the heroes we have known since childhood came from this land. Iraq is a place of epic legends, from Gilgamesh to Adam and Eve to Gilgamesh to Jonah, and it was the fabled site of the Tower of Babel and Ur of the Chaldees, Abraham’s birthplace. Many Biblical prophets were buried in this land as well.
Currently, Iraq is off most people’s travel radar due to safety concerns. When present hostilities cease, the world will finally be able to visit legendary Biblical and historical sites such as Nineveh, ancient Babylon, and the Great Ziggurat of Ur.
In the meantime, you can safely travel to the corner of the country known as Iraqi Kurdistan. The Kurds are friendly, and everyone is happy to meet foreigners, especially Americans and Brits.
