Enjoying the Panama International Air Show

Dear Luke and Leia,

What a fantastic day we had at the Panama International Air Show today! This air show takes place every year at the Panama Pacifico International Airport (known as Howard Air Force Base back when the Canal Zone was occupied by the United States).

Model planes lined up for spectators to see.

Just about every form of air transport was there, from private jets to helicopter — and even a flock of model planes took to the skies!

Model jet fighters

I enjoy models so the motorized jet fighters captivated me the most. They were lightning fast and performed maneuvers that I don’t think real pilots could do, all just by using a remote control.

Buzzed!

The organizers added a flyby from a real Copa Airlines passenger jet to add to the show. Copa is Panama's national airline.

More of the fun

There were even more fun things to do, including fantastic foods, climbing aboard military helicopters and making and flying your own paper airplane.

It was so much fun watching the kids make and fly their creations.

  1. Wow – those are some great planes! We have a “big plane” air show near us every year, and I love watching them fly. (The real Red Bull planes were there this year!) I’ve never seen the model planes in an air show, but that would be awesome too. (Can you tell I’m just a bit of an airplane fan boy? 😉

    1. Aside from the ones we could climb into, that fly-by was the only truly big plane we saw that day. The problem with watching those model planes fly is that it made us want one. 😉

  2. What a great show for kids and the air craft lovers. I’m not that much into it, but my husband would have had a blast there. I must admit, it looks fun.

    1. I’ll confess it now: Dan was far more excited about seeing the air show than I was. Once we got there, though, it became a fun experience, even for me.

  3. That is awesome! There usually are some airshows here in the Middle East but it’s mostly the really really big events which requires for you to buy expensive tickets just to see it. So I’ve never been to one. I love how family-friendly this one is. 🙂

    1. It sounds like Qatar likes to be fancy. Nothing wrong with that, if you can afford it. 🙂 Panama doesn’t have the revenue for that (yet). It has lots of affordable, family-oriented events.

    1. Yeah, Constance, though I’d have been happier if Dan had let me pose when I aimed my plane. I’m not a good-looking subject when it comes to candid shots.

At least I got it in the hole. It was a good shot!
